Starter Tier List & Team Building

Choosing the right starter is critical for the first three gyms. Gamma Emerald features the Physical/Special split, making move utility more important than in the original Generation 3 games.

Mudkip (S-Tier)

  • Water/Ground Typing: Excellent resistances.
  • Marshtomp: Early evolution provides bulk.
  • Coverage: learns Ground moves for Rock/Steel types.

Torchic (A-Tier)

  • Fire/Fighting Evolution: Blaziken offers high offense.
  • Early Power: Strong against the first two gyms.
  • Movepool: Access to Fire and Fighting moves.

Treecko (A-Tier)

  • Speed Focus: Outspeeds early enemies.
  • Grass Utility: Good for Rock and Water gyms.
  • Defensive: Relies on Leech Seed and evasion.
Team Composition

Avoid filling your party with multiple Pokemon of the same type. Prioritize catching a Ralts (Route 102) or Shroomish (Petalburg Woods) to cover your starter's weaknesses.

Core Mechanics & Systems

Gamma Emerald introduces modern mechanics to the Hoenn region. Understanding these systems is essential for efficient progression.

FAQ

Q: Can I play Gamma Emerald on Mac or Linux?

Currently, the Early Access build is Windows-exclusive. While some users report success with Wine/Proton layers, the developer officially supports only Windows for this EA phase.

Q: How do I evolve Pokemon requiring friendship?

Friendship mechanics are implemented. You can increase friendship by walking with the Pokemon, using vitamins, and winning battles. Check the Pokemon's summary screen to gauge friendship levels.

Q: Is the Physical/Special split different from Emerald?

Yes. Gamma Emerald uses the modern split (introduced in Gen 4) where moves like **Crunch** are Physical and **Shadow Ball** is Special, regardless of the Pokemon's attacking stat.

Q: Will my save file be compatible with future updates?

The developer typically ensures save compatibility within major versions (e.g., 1.1.x), but it is always recommended to backup your save folder before installing a new major build.
